Aquatic Milkweed is a petite but powerful plant for moist to wet gardens, rain gardens, and low-lying edges. Topping out at around 1.5 to 2 feet tall, it features slender, lance-shaped leaves and an airy habit that blends well with other low-growing natives. In late spring to early summer, clusters of small, starry white flowers bloom, offering nectar to a range of pollinators. Like all milkweeds, it serves as a vital host for Monarch butterfly caterpillars, helping support their declining populations.
This species is more tolerant of shade and standing moisture than many other milkweeds, making it especially useful in sites where others would struggle. It's a fantastic native alternative for wet spots in the yard that are too often overlooked.
Why Choose Aquatic Milkweed?
Aquatic Milkweed prefers consistently moist soil and should not be allowed to dry out. Cut back old stems in early spring and allow seedpods to mature naturally for reseeding.
