Pennsylvania Sedge is a fine-textured, native woodland sedge that thrives in dry to moderately moist shade. Its narrow, arching leaves form soft, flowing tufts just 6–12 inches tall, gradually knitting together into a wispy green carpet. This makes it an ideal, low-input groundcover or lawn alternative beneath trees, along shaded paths, or in naturalistic plantings where turf struggles.
A cool-season grower, Pennsylvania Sedge greens up early in spring and remains visually soft and inviting throughout the growing season. While it doesn’t host large numbers of specialist insects, it plays a supporting role in the food web—its foliage feeding grasshoppers and other herbivorous insects, and its seeds offering food for birds. With its drought tolerance, deer resistance, and graceful habit, it's a cornerstone for layered shade gardens and native lawn conversions.
Why Choose Pennsylvania Sedge?
Mow once or twice a year if a manicured look is desired. Allow to spread naturally for a soft meadow effect. Comb or rake in early spring to refresh.
