Red-Flowered Buckwheat is a stunning, low-growing California native that brings bold color and texture to dry, sunny gardens. Its bright pink to red flower clusters rise above dense mats of soft gray-green foliage in summer and persist well into fall—drawing in butterflies, native bees, and other pollinators when few other plants are in bloom. At just 1 foot tall and spreading up to 3 feet wide, this compact wildflower is perfect for rock gardens, slopes, borders, and habitat-focused plantings.
The foliage itself forms a silvery, drought-tolerant carpet that softens hard edges and thrives in well-drained, low-fertility soils. Like many Eriogonum species, Red-Flowered Buckwheat plays an important role in coastal and dryland ecosystems, offering extended nectar for pollinators and seeds for small birds. Its tolerance of wind, drought, and sandy or rocky conditions makes it especially well-suited for coastal gardens and Mediterranean-style landscapes.
Note: While often grown ornamentally, this species is a true California native and a key nectar source for pollinators in dry months. It’s an excellent choice for gardeners seeking visual impact and ecological value in arid climates.
Why Choose Red-Flowered Buckwheat?
Prune back flower stalks after bloom if a tidier look is desired, or leave them standing for winter texture and bird seed. Avoid summer irrigation once established—overwatering can reduce lifespan.
