    Details

Black Chokeberry is a versatile native shrub with multi-season beauty and exceptional wildlife value. In spring, clusters of white to light pink flowers attract native bees and other pollinators, followed by glossy dark purple-black berries in late summer. The berries feed birds and other wildlife, and can also be used by people in jams, juices, syrups, and wines.

Typically growing 3–6 feet tall and wide, Black Chokeberry forms a resilient, rounded shrub that fits beautifully into hedgerows, wildlife gardens, edible landscapes, and naturalized borders. Its foliage turns brilliant red to purple in fall, adding a bold final display before winter. Adaptable to a wide range of soils, it performs especially well in moist, well-drained sites and can also be useful in rain gardens or damp landscape edges.

    Why choose Black Chokeberry?

    • White to pale pink spring flowers support pollinators
    • Dark berries feed birds and other wildlife
    • Edible fruit can be used in preserves, juices, and wines
    • Brilliant red to purple fall foliage adds seasonal color
    • Excellent for hedgerows, rain gardens, edible landscapes, and wildlife borders

    Maintenance Tips

Plant Black Chokeberry in full sun to partial shade, with more sun generally producing heavier flowering, fruiting, and fall color. Prune lightly while dormant to shape the shrub or remove older stems, but avoid heavy pruning if you want maximum berry production.
