Dense Blazing Star lives up to its name with tall, fuzzy flower spikes that burst into vibrant purple-pink in mid- to late summer. Rising from tidy clumps of grass-like foliage, the flowers bloom from the top down—unlike most plants—and add an electric vertical accent to sunny beds and prairies. These blooms are a magnet for pollinators, especially native bees, butterflies (including monarchs and swallowtails), and even hummingbirds.
Tolerant of clay soils and moderate moisture, it thrives in full sun and pairs beautifully with shorter grasses and summer wildflowers. While stems may flop in rich soils, they’ll stand tall when supported by neighboring plants. The fading flower spikes provide winter interest and seed for birds, especially finches.
Why Choose Dense Blazing Star?
Stems may flop in rich soils—cut back after bloom or plant alongside sturdy neighbors for support. Deadhead to prolong flowering, or leave seedheads for wildlife interest.
