Husker Red Foxglove Beardtongue adds rich burgundy foliage and airy spring flowers to one of eastern North America’s most garden-friendly native perennials. Deep wine-red leaves emerge in spring and gradually become greener as the season progresses, while dark stems carry loose clusters of white to blush-pink tubular flowers in late spring and early summer. The contrast between dark foliage and pale blooms makes it especially effective in mixed borders and prairie-style plantings.
The native species is an important resource for hummingbirds, butterflies, and numerous native bees, and ‘Husker Red’ retains excellent floral value for pollinators. As a selected form of Penstemon digitalis, however, its burgundy foliage differs chemically from the straight green-leaved species and may be less suitable for some foliage-feeding caterpillars. For gardeners prioritizing maximum host-plant value, it is best used alongside straight-species P. digitalis rather than as a complete replacement.
Why Choose Husker Red Foxglove Beardtongue:
Plant in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil, and avoid overly rich conditions that can encourage floppy growth. Remove spent flower stems for a tidier appearance, or leave some standing for seed and winter structure.
