Lady Fern is a graceful, wide-ranging native woodland species admired for its finely divided, bright green fronds and gently arching form. Found across much of North America, it thrives in moist, shady habitats and makes an excellent structural layer in naturalistic shade gardens, woodland borders, and rain gardens.
This deciduous fern grows 2 to 3 feet tall and spreads slowly by rhizomes to form soft clumps that enhance the cooling feel of forested spaces. Its fronds emerge early in spring and retain their lush texture through summer before fading in fall. Lady Fern tolerates seasonal wetness better than many others and supports biodiversity by providing shelter for insects, amphibians, and other small wildlife.
Why Choose Lady Fern?
Cut back dead fronds in early spring to make room for new growth. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially during hot spells. Can be divided every few years in spring if clumps become crowded.
