Pennsylvania Sedge is a beloved native groundcover for dry shade, forming soft, flowing mats of fine-textured foliage that mimic the look of a natural woodland floor. Its arching, semi-evergreen leaves create a relaxed, grassy aesthetic that works beautifully beneath trees, along shady paths, or as a low-care lawn alternative.
Unlike more moisture-loving sedges, this species thrives in dry, well-drained soils and light to full shade, making it a go-to for challenging sites. It spreads slowly by rhizomes to form loose colonies, never overwhelming its neighbors. In early spring, inconspicuous flowering stems rise above the foliage and set seed that supports birds and small mammals. Its leaves also serve as food for grasshoppers and other insects that help fuel the food web.
Why Pennsylvania Sedge?
Mow or cut back in early spring if desired for a cleaner look. Allow to spread naturally or divide clumps every few years to maintain shape. Tolerates foot traffic but not heavy wear.
