Prairie Smoke is one of the most distinctive native wildflowers, offering beauty long after its blooms have faded. In late spring, nodding pink to rosy-purple flowers hang like tiny lanterns from slender stems above a mound of fern-like foliage. As the flowers mature, they transform into silky, plume-like seed heads that catch the light and sway in the breeze, creating the smoky effect that gives this plant its common name.
Growing just 12–18 inches tall, Prairie Smoke gradually forms a low, attractive mat of foliage that remains appealing throughout the growing season. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, prairie plantings, borders, and sunny slopes. Native bees visit the flowers, while the unique seed heads provide weeks of ornamental interest after bloom.
