    Details

River Birch is a fast-growing native tree with exceptional bark, graceful form, and strong landscape resilience. Its peeling, papery bark curls away in layers of cream, tan, cinnamon, and reddish brown, creating year-round visual interest even after the leaves have fallen. In spring, catkins add seasonal texture, followed by small winged seeds that provide food for birds and other wildlife.

Naturally found along rivers, streams, and wet lowlands, River Birch is especially useful in moist, slightly acidic soils and areas where many trees struggle. It can help stabilize soil along waterways, slopes, and low-lying landscape edges, while also supporting native insects and the birds that depend on them. Typically reaching 40–70 feet tall, it works best in larger landscapes, rain garden edges, naturalized areas, and sites with room for its broad, airy canopy.

    Why choose River Birch?

    • Exfoliating bark provides standout four-season interest
    • Fast-growing native tree for larger landscapes
    • Tolerates moist soils and low-lying areas
    • Helps stabilize streambanks, slopes, and erosion-prone sites
    • Supports wildlife with seeds, foliage, and habitat structure

    Maintenance Tips

Plant River Birch in full sun to partial shade with moist, slightly acidic soil for best performance. Water during establishment and avoid planting in hot, dry, compacted sites where drought stress can reduce vigor.
