    Details

Western Spiderwort brings rich blue-violet color and graceful texture to sunny, naturalistic gardens. Clusters of three-petaled flowers open in shades of blue, violet, and occasionally rose, each centered with bright yellow anthers. Individual blooms are short-lived and often close as the day warms, but fresh buds open in succession for weeks, creating an ever-changing display above narrow, blue-green foliage.

Native to prairies, plains, dunes, and open woodlands across much of central and western North America, Western Spiderwort is well suited to meadows, dry borders, slopes, and prairie-style plantings. Its flowers provide pollen for bumble bees and other native bees, especially during the cooler morning hours. Growing 1–2 feet tall, it forms sturdy clumps that blend beautifully with native grasses and later-blooming perennials.

    Why Choose Western Spiderwort?

    • Blue-violet flowers add cool color to sunny native gardens
    • Provides pollen for bumble bees and other native bees
    • Adaptable to meadows, dry borders, slopes, and open woodland edges
    • Narrow foliage adds soft, grassy texture
    • Pairs well with native grasses and summer-blooming perennials

After flowering, foliage may become relaxed or untidy, so plant Western Spiderwort among supportive grasses or later-blooming perennials. Cut back tired foliage if needed to refresh the planting, and allow clumps to broaden naturally where space allows.
