White Sage—also known as Bee Sage or Sacred Sage—is a striking evergreen shrub native to Southern California and Baja California. With its silvery-white, lance-shaped leaves and upright form, this plant brings year-round texture and fragrance to arid gardens. In late spring and early summer, tall flower stalks rise above the foliage, bearing pale lavender to white blooms that are irresistible to hummingbirds, bumblebees, and native specialist bees.
Highly aromatic and deeply rooted in cultural and ecological significance, White Sage is a keystone species in chaparral ecosystems. It thrives in full sun, poor soils, and dry conditions, making it a standout choice for low-water landscapes and native habitat gardens.
Why Choose White Sage?
Plant in full sun with fast-draining soil—gravelly or sandy loam is ideal. Avoid summer irrigation once established, as this can cause root rot. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy form, but avoid cutting into woody stems.
