Wild Petunia (Ruellia humilis) is a charming, resilient native perennial that brings soft lavender trumpet-shaped blooms to dry, sunny gardens. Despite its name, this plant is not a true petunia—but it offers similar flower shape with far greater durability, perfect for rock gardens, native borders, or dry prairie-style plantings.
Growing to just 12 inches tall, Wild Petunia features dark green, hairy foliage and a spreading habit that helps it fill in open spaces. It’s tough as nails, tolerating poor, dry soils, and is particularly useful as a groundcover among other low-growing natives. While it can self-seed, unwanted seedlings are easy to remove to maintain a tidy planting.
Its continuous summer bloom draws in native bees and butterflies, adding both color and ecological value to hot, dry spots where other plants may struggle.
Why Choose Wild Petunia?
Plant Wild Petunia in full sun and well-drained soil for a hardy, long-blooming native that adds subtle color and resilience to your native garden.
